Mittens that are a little more interesting than your standard guy fare (more charcoal gray yarn, anyone?) that still appeal to those slightly wary about handknits. The chunky yarn works up quickly, and the subtle colorway is broken up by alternating each round with opposite ends of the skein. One skein plus a quick knit equals a great gift project.

Finished Size: Size 9" hand circumference and 11½" long.

Yarn: Noro Kochoran (50% wool, 30% angora, 20% silk; 176 yd [162 m]/100 g): #40 grey multi, 1 skein. Yarn distributed by Knitting Fever.

Needles: Size 10½ (6.5 mm): set of 5 doublepointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m): two of one color for thumb, one in contrasting color for beg of rnd; waste yarn; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 14 sts and 21 rnds = 4" in St st in the rnd.

I think this pattern is relatively easy to modify for a women's mitten.  My husband does not wear sweaters of any kind.  When shoveling snow he will wear a knitted hat - but will only wear leather, lined gloves.  So I want to make these for ME!

Is this obsession with mittens Knitting Daily's response to some freezing August weather conditions brought about by climate change in the USA? Even here in the north UK it's 21 degrees and knitting thick woolly mittens could not be further from my mind. Some lacy fingerless mitts would be much more seasonal.

While these mittens would be quick and easy to make for someone who knows how to knit in the round, I think they should be categorized as more of an Interemediate or Early Intermediate level project. Knitting in the round is considered Interemdiate level skill per CYCA guidelines.

If this would work, I'd first wind my yarn into two separate balls, starting from each end. I think this would eliminate the twisting  that Sandi encountered while knitting her pair.

I wouild make a pair for my husband and one for me.  Is there a substitute yarn as  I do a lot of charity knitting and I'm sure a 17-year-old would wear a men's size.  Thanks.  Carol

Winding the yarn into 2 center-pull balls eliminates both twisting AND rolling.  (you can do this without a winder if you wind it around a core like a broomstick ot paper-towel roll)

I agree with the climate comment!  It has been 95F here (30C)...who wants to knit  bulky wool mitts in August?  Wouldn't some lacy fingerless gloves in an interesting (maybe soy or bamboo) sock-weight yarn be more fun and weather-appropriate?

Maybe the AC is too cold in your office.
