By any chance are you trying to use the yarn while it is still in the skein format?  You need to wind a ball or use a ball winder before you use yarn that comes on a skein.  If you don't have someone to hold the yarn out for you use the back of a chair and wind like you might have done with your mother or grandmother.  Some knitting books and videos also give tips on winding balls correctly.

If you have already made the skein into a ball I have no great thoughts on solving your problem, sorry.

Don't give up-- kniitting is great and eventually becomes very relaxing!

THANKS FOR RESPONDING. I AM USING YARN FROM LION BRAND AND RED HEART . I THOUGHT YOU COULD USE IT STRAIGHT FROM THE SKEIN. I WILL TRY THE OTHER WAY AS YOU ADVISED. THANK YOU  SO MUCH . I VERY MUCH WANT TO LEARN THIS ART.
