I'm new to crochet and would like to learn how to make a granny square afghan. Is there a pattern to follow and techniques I must learn? I know how to single crochet but that is about it.
I'm a knitter learning to crochet and the cover pattern for Interweave Crochet Summer 2008, the Santa Fe Shawl, looks really fun! Are there plans to bring it to the KD store? I suppose I could hunt down a copy of the magazine via Ravelry's groups and buy it, but I'd much rather have a PDF that I could re-print if I spill something on it!

Thanks!

I'm a knitter, who crocheted a million or so years ago. My granddaughter wanted a ladybug afghan that she saw in one of my pattern files. It's a herrschners design. I started making it for her, but cannot do it because of the arthritis in my hands. It's mostly double crochet with color changes.

Where can I find someone who would finish this for me. My granddaughter keeps asking about it. I tried Craigs List, but couldn't find anyone. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee.

I love in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, but I assume all of the materials can be mailed to someone.

1. Does one "have to" wind yarn into a "ball" before starting to knit or crochet? I never do and don't seem to have a problem. But for all I know I could be doing better.

2. Why do some patterns call for a certain number of balls and others for a certain number of skeins? How do I translate that into something I can use to make sure I have purchased enough yarn, especially if I choose a different brand or type than what the pattern calls for?

I hope someone can help me with this. There are a couple of patterns I have not attempts because I'm afraid I'll either buy too much or too little yarn. (Though too much isn't exactly a problem, is it?)

I really need some help figuring out the "motif" pattern directions. I have unsuccessfully made several attempts by chaining 76, making the 8 dc into the 2nd chain from hook and so on. After completing row 1 I seem to have about 68 sts instead of 74, also there never seems to be enough room to do all the stitches the pattern calls for at any time and ending with a total of 74 sts. Maybe I am not reading the directions correctly. I assume the bracketed instructions are to be completed fully 8 times as written? Than 10 sts straight and a bracketed repeat 8 times again? I understand the curve concept with increases and decreases but 8 times never seems to fit.

I gotta say that this "Easy" design has increases my blood pressure and almost brought me to tears. I really feel stupid!

thanks!

Interweave Crochet

I just saw the preview of the new Fall Interweave Crochet and can't wait to receive mine. It looks so sophisticated. One beautiful project after the next.

Crochet runs in our family and my Irish Grandma did some beautiful fine work, which I still have. My mother is 84 and she still crochets too and loves it. I actually taught myself to crochet when I was about 15 - prior to that I had no interest - typical teenager!!

I live in the UK and the shops here are full of lovely crochet summer clothes at the moment - something of a revival!

Ocean Pearls Cardigan

Can anyone recommend a substitute yarn for the Mystik used in the ocean pearls cardigan in the Interweave Crochet Summer 2008 issue. I love the sweater, but the yarn would run me well over $150.00. Also do you know the weight of Mystik? I've been unable to find info on whether it is a 2, 3 or 4 ply yarn.

Thanks

Jan

Diamond Sage Wrap

Hi all,

Has anyone begun the pattern for the Diamond Sage Wrap in the current issue of Interweave Crochet?

I can't seem to get the gauge right.....

thanks,

Roxanne

I crochet

Can't crochet but would like to learn

Hello,

Quite frankly put, I can't crochet. I have learned it several times, both my grandmothers showed me, even one of my great-grandmothers, my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law but it seems I can't get the hang of it.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I can do a crochet chain and I can also crochet along the edge of a knitted piece but I would like to be able to do more. Still, everytime I try I miss the second needle.

Any advice on good beginners' books, or how to "train" my basic skills?

Cheers, Julia

Looking for a good pattern.....

Hi!

I am interested in a new pattern for a prayer shawl. The one that it seems like everyone uses doesn't seem to be very interesting to me any longer.

I really want to make one for my husband's grandmother but she is a larger woman and the pattern I find everywhere seems to be made for a thinner woman - it's simply not wide enough.

I have tried to add rows on but like I said, it's a boring pattern and I am looking for something a bit different (but not too difficult as I will get frustrated and stop - I know me too well). \

Does anyone have any suggestions or can you recommend a book/pattern?

Thanks everyone!
